And you may get frustrated because you see a few like this on Lake Taneycomo, but you’re not finding exactly what you want on Table Rock Lake.

We’re here to help and to explain how Table Rock Lake is not like other lakes. In fact, tourism barely makes the top 5 reasons of importance for Table Rock Lake!

👉 The main reason for Table Rock Lake’s existence is actually to protect the world’s second largest rice crop, located in northeast Arkansas. 

Table Rock Lake is owned and protected by the Army Corps of Engineers, and their priorities above tourism are:

  1. Protect the rice crop
  2. Hydropower
  3. Conservation of nature
  4. Clean water supply

So with those priorities, the Corps has some pretty strict rules for the lake to help keep it clean and at the right table levels for the lake to do its very important jobs.

That said, Lake Taneycomo has different rules than Table Rock Lake. So we’ve split the below info into two sections, one for each lake.

Table Rock Lake

1. County regulations

Because of county regulations on Table Rock Lake, private vacation homes with Table Rock Lake in the backyard are generally not allowed to be short term vacation rentals, unless it is one that was already in place before the regulations.

Note that there may be vacation home rentals that are advertised as lakefront, and they will technically be lakefront, but it’s good to understand the limitations that come with being lakefront: the shoreline.

2. Shoreline is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers

To have Table Rock Lake in your backyard AND have a view of it is very rare because the Army Corps of Engineers owns the shoreline and does not allow the vegetation to be removed, even for a view.

They will occasionally grant a vegetation permit to clear a small path only.

So if you find a vacation home rental that boasts that it is lakefront, you might technically be lakefront and hear the water lapping at the shore, but very slim chances that you’ll actually see the water. 

So if you want to see the lake, you’ll need to have a higher vantage point to get above the tree tops on the shoreline. That’s why most of the vacation home rentals are built higher up — for a view of the lake.

3. Boat slips are by permit only with strict rules

All docks on Table Rock Lake are there only with approval and permit from the Army Corps of Engineers. Most docks are permitted as private boat slips, and those boat slips may only hold the boat that is registered to the slip.

These may not be rented out to others, or there is a risk of losing the dock permit.

The boat slips that can be rented are the ones on docks that are permitted as resort docks or public marina docks. Each resort and marina that has one of these high demand docks with boat slip rentals will have its own pricing and availability.

4. Swimming in the lake

For swimming in a lake, most folks choose Table Rock Lake where the water is much, much warmer than Lake Taneycomo. In the summertime, the water temperature of Table Rock Lake can even reach an average of 84 degrees and feel like bath water.

There are many quiet coves on Table Rock Lake to swim in, whether you wade in from the shore or jump from your boat.

We also recommend sticking to the coves for swimming and floating as the main channel gets quite busy with boats and jet skis.

Lake Taneycomo

1. County regulations

Private vacation homes that are lakefront on Lake Taneycomo are easier to get a short term vacation rental permit, so you’ll find several homes available. These range from one bedroom condos to large houses.

2. Shoreline has less vegetation

Lake Taneycomo has less vegetation on the shoreline and gentler walks with less incline. It’s the original riverbed of the White River, and the water is the very cold bottom water from Table Rock Lake, flowing through the dam to create hydropower.

So you’ll be able to find your lakefront view plus gentle walk to the shore to do a bit of fishing. Trout fishing is top notch on Lake Taneycomo.

3. Boat slips are more available

All docks on Lake Taneycomo still must have approval and permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, but the rules are different. The private docks and boat slips are allowed to be used by guests if your property has one.

4. Swimming in the lake

Lake Taneycomo is the coldest lake in Missouri with an average water temperature of 48 degrees.

You definitely CAN go swimming (at your own risk), although most people prefer kayaks and various boats when out on this lake. You can rent a pontoon, bass boat, or kayak from Scotty’s Trout Dock.
